Allergy in human populations is increasing due to modern lifestyle. Farm children and children with an anthroposophic lifestyle showed less allergic symptoms. This article describes the modern insights about nowadays nutrition and lifestyle factors impacting on the development of allergies and the research done in the 1920s about the health status of indigenous people and their eating behaviour. Many epidemiological studies mention the quality of farm milk, raw milk and milk fat as important factors to reduce the risk of allergies. It is explained why and how a high-quality milk fat in terms of conjugated linolenic acid and omega-3 long-chain fatty acids are influencing the cell physiology. These new insights will affect future strategies of... |

Nutritional regulation of milk and meat fatty acid composition has been the subject of intense research during the last few decades. Considerable progress has been made towards understanding the role of diet on enhancing the nutritional value of ruminantderived foods while more recent studies have attempted to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the changes in milk and tissue lipid fatty acid composition in ruminants. Diet is the major environmental factor influencing the CLA content of ruminant milk whilst the effects of genotype, stage of lactation and parity are relatively minor (Palmquist el al. 2005). Concentrations of CLA in ruminant meat are dependent on diet, gender, slaughter weight and breed with evidence of variable enrichment... |

• Maize production varies widely from year to year, given Zambia’s heavy dependence on rainfed cultivation. Thus consumers face wide swings in availability of their primary food staple. • Typical public responses include increased food aid inflows, government commercial imports and stock releases, and tight controls on private sector trade. While intended to improve domestic supply, these public responses can inadvertently exacerbate price instability and food insecurity for Zambian consumers. • Two key private sector responses – private cross-border maize trade and consumer substitution of alternate food staples (such as cassava) for maize - can also help to moderate food consumption volatility. • Together, private imports and increased cassava... |

Given heavy dependence on rainfed maize production, Zambia must routinely cope with pronounced production and consumption volatility in their primary food staple. Typical policy responses include increased food aid flows, government commercial imports and stock releases, and tight controls on private sector trade. This paper examines recent experience in Zambia, using a simple economic model to assess the likely impact of maize production shocks on the domestic maize price and on staple food consumption under alternative policy regimes. In addition to an array of public policy instruments, the analysis evaluates the quantitative impact of two key private sector responses in moderating food consumption volatility— private cross-border maize trade and... |

In organic farming there is an ongoing discussion on piglet castration without anaesthesia and possible alternatives to this practice due to animal welfare concerns. Consumer acceptance of alternatives to piglet castration without anaesthesia plays an important role in this discussion. This contribution examines organic consumers’ attitudes towards piglet castration without anaesthesia and the alternatives castration with anaesthesia and analgesia, immunocastration and fattening of entire males. Additionally, consumers’ willingness-to-pay for the alternatives is determined. The results show that animal welfare, food safety and health concerns influence consumers’ attitudes towards the alternatives. However, the individual perception of those aspects is... |

Though amaranth has been studied intensively for its exceptional nutritional properties, little has been reported about its capacity for fighting poverty, securing food supplies, turning migrations, or its impact on the environment and the prospect for improvement of living conditions of those farmers cultivating amaranth. This paper addresses possibilities and limitations that Mexican small-scale farmers are facing to enhance sustainable livelihoods in the amaranth value chain. The study reveals that amaranth, as an alternative crop and livelihood, is perhaps one of the most complete endogenous natural resources that small-scale farmers have to combat the above-mentioned problems. The study identified several local and regional barriers for increasing the... |

The maize-oriented agricultural economies throughout Southern Africa are in fundamental transition. Increased recognition of the costs of historical controls on pricing and marketing already has led to partial maize market liberalization in several countries in the region. However, there is still intense debate over the appropriate scope and implementation of future food market reform. Much of the debate derives from uncertainty over the consequences of comprehensive and politically risky changes to domestic markets, especially at a time when regional market conditions are also in flux due to agricultural restructuring in neighboring countries. There is currently little information on the direction and magnitude of grain trade between South Africa,... |

In most developing countries, historically, the main strategy for improving the food sector has focused on increasing farm-level production. But in recent years, with the emphasis on value chain analysis, there has been much more focus on subsector studies, demand-driven approaches, and improving vertical coordination to assure product quality to final consumption markets. Millet, sorghum, and later rice were the traditional leading three cereal crops produced and consumed in Mali. Maize has trailed them for more than two decades, but from mid 1990s on, it has been produced and consumed in much larger quantities. Given the potentials of maize, developing and better organizing its subsector has the potential to not only increase revenues for maize farmers,... |
